It's morning in the mountains. The sun illuminates the haze around you, and the view is astonishing in all directions. The scene is spectacular. You are in the Paklenica National Park - the mountain temple of northern Dalmatia.
Between 150 and 200 kilometers of hiking trails and roads have been marked in the park area. There will be something for everyone, from easy hiking trails to those recommended only to experienced mountaineers in excellent condition.
After soaking up the view of the magnificent stone walls of the Velika Paklenica canyon at the entrance to the park, you can head to one of the easier trails, the one towards the Manita peć cave. You will walk for about an hour and a half, and at the finish line you will find one of the most attractive sights of Paklenica.
It takes about two hours to walk to the mountain lodge along the main path through the canyon. There are also several mountain shelters in the park.
Spectacular views
If you plan to conquer the peaks of the largest Croatian mountain, in Paklenica you will find a few of them higher than 1700 meters. The highest peak of Velebit, Vaganski vrh (1757 m) is one of the points on the road leading from Struga to Velika Paklenica.
There is also Sveto brdo (1753 m) which can be reached in five hours from the Paklenica Mountain Lodge. Very demanding and steep is the ascent to the top of Liburnia (1709 m) which is recommended only to experienced mountaineers in excellent condition. The award is a spectacular lookout on the Dalmatian islands.
Remember that you always have to go to the mountains well-equipped and ready - even on the simplest trails you always go in company, with enough water and suitable clothes and shoes.
